NHL: Ilya Kovalchuk deal with the Devils voided by the NHL
Shortly after the New Jersey Devils held a press conference to announce the re-signing of Ilya Kovalchuk, the NHL has rejected it because it circumvents the league’s salary cap. The deal now needs to be reworked because once again Ilya Kovalchuk is a free agent. On Monday Ilya Kovalchuk re-signed with the New Jersey Devils for 17 years, 102 million, roughly earning him 6 million a year till he’s 44. The deal was deemed illegal because the years of low salary at the end of the contract were added for the only reasons of lowering the cap hit. In the last 5 years he was to earn 550,000.
