Cain Velasquez vs Alistair Overeem
Pending Alistair Overeem can defeat Antonio Silva in his return at UFC 156, he definitely will be getting the next crack at the belt. The UFC brass as well as Dana White has confirmed this several times, so as fans, we basically know this one. If Silva plays spoiler, I doubt he would get the next crack at the belt considering Cain Velasquez already dismantled him not long ago. I’d say though, he definitely would be maybe only one fight away from getting a crack at the belt. It’s only going to get more interesting when late Strikeforce arrivals Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett join the UFC very soon.

Junior Dos Santos vs Cheick Kongo
I realize Junior Dos Santos wants an immediate rematch, but Cain Velasquez had to fight once before he was able to get his rematch. I think it should work the same way, and if Alistair Overeem wins, the wait for the rematch would be way to long of a layoff between fights. It’s tough finding a match out there though that would make sense for Dos Santos because he’s dismantled most of the heavyweights at the top of the division. I think the loser of the Overeem/Silva fight would be ideal, but Antonio Silva is a friend and teammate, so that’s not possible. If Overeem loses though, that definitely would make sense for Dos Santos, and it would be awesome considering they have “beef”. Anyways, I’m not a fan of this matchmaking I have here in terms of rankings, but it would be a fun fight still. Kongo is not a slouch of an opponent by any means either, and actually dropped Velasquez several times when they fought. Kongo is also capable of grinding an opponent down, which is exactly what Dos Santos needs in order to show that he has improved. Overall, It would be a nice recovery fight for Dos Santos while still being tested.
Jim Miller vs Gray Maynard
Jim Miller has been one of the top fighters in the lightweight division for sometime, but can’t quite win that all important title eliminator fight. Now, I’m not saying this fight should be a title eliminator but it certainly would have either one of these guys at least one fight away from a crack at the belt. Miller replaced Gray Maynard at UFC 155, who was originally supposed to fight Joe Lauzon. Now, if Lauzon had won, I’m sure that fight would of been rescheduled to happen. But, since Miller won, I think it only makes sense to match them up. Also, they are both at the top of the division and it certainly would be a scrap in a all important lightweight contest.

(Joe Lauzon) By Stephen McGinnis [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons (Nate Diaz) By Bhenricksen (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons
Joe Lauzon vs Nate Diaz
Joe Lauzon has to be in the mix for pound for pound most exciting fighters. He brings it every time, and always engages in an all out war with his opponent. It should be duly noted Lauzon has 11 post-fight bonuses, and eight in his last nine fights. A perfect opponent to keep the bonuses going would be Nate Diaz. I could imagine the scrap in this fight, and how awesome it would be. Even if it hit the floor, the slick jui-jitsu of both fighters would be intriguing. I think this fights needs to happen, and I know for sure the fans would be drawn to this one for sure.
Costa Philippou vs Yushin Okami
Costa Philippou is on the rise after defeating one of the top middleweights in the division, and on short notice no less. Philippou is now a winner of five straight, and another big fight should be in line. I think Yushin Okami would be a great test for Philippou because like we saw at UFC 155, Okami can break a fighter easily with his smothering wrestling. Philippou seems like he is ready to take on the big dogs, and Okami is certainly one. It would be a great test for Philippou, and another name he could potentially add to hit list on his way to a title shot.
Eddie Wineland vs Raphael Assuncao
This fight would be a good one, as two perennial bantamweight title contenders would match up. Eddie Wineland has looked amazing lately, and is certainly finding his stride as he’s beaten the likes of Scott Jorgensen, and Brad Pickett. Raphael Assuncao since dropping down to bantamweight is 3-0, and recently defeated the hyped Mike Easton with a broken arm no less. Although Wineland is ahead of him in terms of rankings, Assuncao is still a top 10 bantamweight, and after beating Easton deserves a big fight. Considering they are solid win streaks, it only makes sense to pair them up. Obviously though this depends on Assuncao’s recovery time, as he broke his arm during his last fight.

Main Card Breakdown
After one night of fights, another night begins, and our main event should be an interesting one. Roy Nelson will meet Matt Mitrione whom is replacing Shane Carwin due to an injury. Mitrione is 5-1, and all those fights are in the UFC which is very rare for any fighter. On the top of my head the only other one who has achieved such, is Matt Riddle. Mitrione is going to need to put forth a great performance though to beat Nelson who is as durable as they come. Mitrione already had one step up in competition in Kongo, and failed miserably to capitalize anything in that fight. Nelson is a very complete fighter, and one of only 2 men to go the distance with Junior Dos Santos. The man has an iron chin, an extra padding in that gut. Nelson can take this fight anywhere he wants to, but I’d think he is going to keep this one standing, and take Mitrione to the cage and beat him up in the clinch. I really don’t see Mitrione having much of a chance here, as Nelson is better anywhere the fight goes. Nelson via decision.
Now, I’ll be honest here I didn’t watch an episode of this season, which is rare because I normally like TUF. It’s just been very uninteresting lately, so I just didn’t make it a priority to watch. But, I do know Mike Ricci from his Ringside MMA fights, as well as his short lived Bellator career. That short lived Bellator career though, isn’t to say he is bad or anything, he just ran into the future champion Pat Curran. He certainly is a gifted fighter though, and he has some heavy hands to boot. As for Colton Smith, I know he is a Army Ranger, and he pretty good wrestler. The only thing he doesn’t really have enough here is experience, and Ricci has a good amount. Ricci also has fought some notable names as well, and has some decent wins including a win over Jordan Mein. I honestly think Ricci is going to KO him, and maybe I don’t know enough about Smith to say he has no chance, but Ricci is gifted, and we will see him be crowned as the welterweight TUF Finale 16 winner.
Another battle of heavyweights is on the card, which should be a really good one. Two kickboxers will meet, and I don’t see this one going to the distance. Shane Del Rosario is coming off his first professional loss, and will look to get back on track. One of the more talented prospects to come over from Strikeforce, with a serious Muay Thai kickboxing background, and he is very good on the ground to boot. This is definitely what I’d call Kryptonite for most heavyweights. His opponent is the very popular Pat Barry, who’d I’d have to believe needs a win here in the worst way. Barry in his last 4 fights is 1-3, so he might be on the cutting block, although his fights are exactly what the UFC and fans love. To be honest, I think this one will start standing, and Del Rosario at some point is going to take Barry down, and exploit is non existent ground game. Barry has to come out aggressive and fight on the inside, but I’m not sure he is going to come out like that. I just don’t see Barry winning this one because once it hits the ground, I’d just consider it over. Del Rosario by submission.
This next fight is such a fun one, and I expect someone’s lights to go out. Jamie Varner and Melvin Guillard will go toe to toe, and I expect this to be an all out war slugfest. Varner after returning to the UFC, and knocking out the heavily hyped prospect Edson Barboza put forth an excellent fight against Joe Lauzon, but came up short when Lauzon strapped on a triangle choke to end it. Varner looks to rebound, and although he like to stand and bang, he can threaten a submission in this fight. Guillard who is regarded as one of the most talented lightweights has hit a rough patch in his career just shortly after an all time high. So, in other words, his career has been a roller coaster lately. Guillard is one of the most athletic lightweights, and he packs a punch to boot on the feet, but his ground game has cost him just about every fight. Varner having never been knocked out, I really like his chances to knock out Guillard early. I’ve just seen a resurgence from Varner, and his stand up looks great. I expect him to unload on Guillard and finish him early.
I’m not going to over analyze our first fight of the main card, but I really like Dustin Poirier here. He is exceptional anywhere this fight goes, and Jonathan Brookins hasn’t quiet lived up to being a TUF winner. Brookins is a nice wrestler with a smother top game, but I don’t think his striking game is all there yet. He just hasn’t had much success lately, but that is in part to the quality of his opponents. I’d say this is the best opponent he will have fought, not discrediting Koch but Poirier is a contender in the featherweight division. Poirier is going to roll in this fight en route to a decision win.

Junior Dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez II
Dana White already hinted that he liked this rematch, and I have to agree. The first one was way too short to really grasp the greatness that could be at hand in this heavyweight contest. Literally these are the two very best heavyweights in the world at the moment, and it would be compelling to see if Cain would shoot in for a takedown earlier this time. JDS seems like an unstoppable force in the UFC, and totally dominated Frank Mir at UFC 146. JDS only needed to shrug off one takedown, as he picked away at Mir on the feet, and put him away in the second round. Cain also looked great at UFC 146, as he took down “Bigfoot” Silva within seconds and ground and pounded him into oblivion, earning the TKO stoppage victory in the first round. It was so dominate, I think it warrants Cain the title shot, especially if Daniel Cormier has a fight still left in Strikeforce. I can definitely get re-excited for this matchup instantly!
VS

Frank Mir vs Werdum/Russow Loser
Frank Mir valiantly stepped in to face Junior Dos Santos for the Heavyweight title after Alistair Overeem was removed for testing positive for high testosterone levels. It was a tough match for Mir, as he was picked apart for the entire fight and succumbed to defeat in the second round. But, by no means does this mean Frank Mir is done. He still is the best BJJ black belt in the division, and has very underrated striking. At UFC 147, Werdum and Russow will tangle in what will be a big fight for these guys. I think the winner should be warranted a number one contenders match, but that’s another story. The loser of this fight would be perfect for Mir, and stylistically I think either would make it a fun fight, although Werdum would be the dream matchup here.

Antonio Silva vs Shane Carwin
The addition of “Bigfoot” Silva to the heavyweight division was exciting but seeing him get pummeled while blood covered his vision was rather upsetting. I wanted to see what he had to offer, considering he lost 20 pounds in order to increase his speed, he looked physically better but one gash above the eye foretold the tale of the fight. He’s still one of the top fighters in the heavyweight division, and I don’t see him falling down in terms of who he fights next. I think Carwin who should be ready to go soon, would be a perfect fight. Carwin is still a top fighter in the UFC despite his 2 fight losing streak, but age/injuries is catching up with him. His goal of getting a second chance at the belt is winding down but a win against “Bigfoot” Silva would certainly propel Carwin back into relevancy. This would be a nice scrap, size wise they would be close to even, and it would be interesting to see these guys stand and trade with each other.

Roy Nelson vs Brock Lesnar
Roy “Big Country” Nelson made an early statement at UFC 146, only needing 51 seconds to put away Dave Herman. Nelson has been up and down in UFC tenure, trading wins and losses but he continues to state that he is at the top of the heavyweight division. I’m not sure I agree with Roy but I do love his fighting style, and I think he is a keeper in the heavyweight division. He has also been vocal about fighting Brock Lesnar, which prompted my interest when Lesnar made a rare appearance at UFC 146. His presence at the event, and the fact he wanted to talk to Dana face to face after the event, sparked this match making. I think this would be a really fun fight. Especially considering what Roy Nelson has been saying, I think it would be fuel for Lesnar to comeback and fight him. PPV could use Lesnar, and Fans love Roy Nelson…it would be perfect!

Pat Barry vs Dave Herman
Immediate reaction to this fight is that someone would be getting knocked out in this one for sure. Both combine for 37 fights, 21 knock outs, and only 2 decisions. This definitely would be a fan friendly fight, and with both these guys, dont expect it to hit the ground, unless its someones face of course. Another reason I match these guys up is that it’s pretty clear with recent setbacks that these guys are at the lower tier of the UFC heavyweight division, so it makes sense.

Stipe Miocic vs Gabriel Gonzaga
Stipe Miocic is on the rise in the UFC heavyweight division, and with his victory over undefeated prospect Shane del Rosario, he is now 3-0 in the UFC. It wasn’t an easy fight, until Stipe brought the fight to the ground in the second round, where he pummeled Del Rosario until the referee stopped it. It was an impressive win and while I first considered a fight against the winner of Browne/Rothwell, I think another gritty veteran matchup against someone like Gabriel Gonzaga would be rather beneficial. It wouldn’t be rushing Stipe to face the divisions best, and also Gonzaga would prove to be a tough typical prospect/veteran test fight. Also Gonzaga derailed prospect Ednaldo Oliveira at UFC 142, so I think it would be an intriguing fight.

Shane Del Rosario vs Christian Morecraft
Shane Del Rosario is no longer undefeated after being beaten by fellow prospect Stipe Miocic. Del Rosario put in a great first round, using his kicks to keep Stipe at a distance. But, a takedown in the second round, and some ground and pound would ultimately be the downfall to Del Rosario. I fully expect Del Rosario to get another fight, and I think he has a bright future still in the UFC. He was on the top of his game, until a drunk driver hit his car, and I though he looked really good especially for that long layoff. A fight against Christian Morecraft would be ideal, especially considering both have never gone to a decision. But also more importantly, that both will need to win, more so Morecraft who is only 1-3 in the UFC.

Stefan Struve vs Hunt
This fight was supposed to go down at UFC 146, but Hunt had to pull out with an injury. Struve expressed after defeating Lavar Johnson (who stepped in for Hunt) that he still would like to face Mark Hunt. I liked this fight from the get go, and I think it would be a quick, but fun fight.

Brendan Schaub vs Lavar Johnson
Lavar Johnson was on fire in the UFC until valiantly stepping in to fight Stefan Struve on a few weeks notice. Struve was able to pull guard, and submit Johnson, who’s kryptonite is the ground game. Although Johnson saw his 2 fight win streak snap, he made a bunch of fans, and made a name for himself. I expect the UFC to match him up with someone who will stand and bang, and I think Schaub would be game for that. Schaub has hit a rough patch though in his UFC career, dropping 2 fights straight, both by knockout. This would be a tough fight for Schaub who’s chin now seems to be suspect, but the with the right gameplan (takedown), Schaub could get back into the win column.

UFC 117 Fighters Matchmaking
Anderson Silva vs Winner of Chael Sonnen vs Vitor Belfort
VS

With Anderson Silva out till 2011, it only makes sense for this fight to happen. Vitor Belfort was originally supposed to get Silva at UFC 112 but got hurt prior to the event. Belfort will be ready to go around November and so will Chael Sonnen. This fight would decide who gets Silva next. Belfort hasn’t fought since dismantling Rich Franklin in 2009 and is coming off an injury. Sonnen recently loss to Silva at UFC 117 but destroyed Silva for 4 1/2 Rounds until making a huge mistake which resulted in a submission loss. This would be an ideal and exciting fight with Silva out till 2011.
——————————————————————————————————
Jon Fitch vs Winner of George St. Pierre vs Josh Koscheck
VS

Jon Fitch now has won 5 in a row since losing to George St.Pierre. He recently defeated Thiago Alves for the 2nd time, Alves was the 3rd ranked fighter in the Welterweight division. Fitch deserves a title shot next verse the winner of GSP and Koscheck. He has beaten some top fighter, and has beaten guys on short notice which is tough for a fighter. Though he is unimpressive in the fans eyes by winning by decision every fight, he show why he is a top wrestler.
——————————————————————————————————
Thiago Alves vs Loser of Martin Kampmann vs Jake Shields
VS

Thiago Alves even with his recent loss to Jon Fitch and before that George St. Pierre is still at the top of the welterweight division. Jon Fitch should be next in line for a title shot and then the winner of Martin Kampmann vs Jake Shields should be next after that. The loser of the fight wouldn’t fall out of the top and Alves hasn’t either. It would be a good co main event or main card fight.
——————————————————————————————————
Clay Guida vs Tyson Griffin

This would be a good rematch to have especially with Guida and Griffin around the top 15 welterweights. Guida has been on the rise with 2 straight wins now, and the once top ten Griffin on the downfall with 2 straight losses. This would be an exciting rematch just like the first fight at UFC 72 when Griffin won by split decision. It was a close fight that could of went either way and a fight Guida would want to erase with a win. Griffin needs a bounce back win and to beat Guida who is one of the toughest welterweights would be a notable win.
——————————————————————————————————
Rafael Dos Anjos vs Kurt Pellegrino

Both Rafael Dos Anjos and Kurt Pellegrino have lost there last fights after being on the rise in the lightweight division. Dos Anjos was riding a 3 fight win streak before losing to Clay Guida and Pellegrino was riding a 4 fight win streak before losing to George Sotiropoulos. Although Pellegrino might be higher in the rankings than Dos Anjos but this would be a very good technical fight to watch. Both are more strong suited at submitting people, could be an exciting fight and a bounce back fight for both as well.
——————————————————————————————————
Matt Hughes vs Mike Swick

Matt Hughes is quickly climbing back in the welterweight division since his loss to Thiago Alves. Hughes is riding a 3 fight win streak since the loss that many felt was Hughes last but he proved them wrong. Mike Swick who was once a fight away from GSP, then loss another fight has fell down in the ranking but not to far. Swick has also been calling out Hughes to fight him, so this could be a real possible match. Both men have a lot to gain and a lot to lose from this fight. Hughes with a win would get himself into a big fight that could get him into the mix of a title shot. Swick could end his 2 fight losing streak and up
——————————————————————————————————
Ricardo Almeida vs Denis Siver

Ricardo Almeida and Denis Siver would be a good main card fight for UFC 122 in Germany. Almeida is recently coming off a loss to a top 10 welterweight in Matt Hughes, before that he had a nice 3 fight win streak and was on the rise. Siver has won his last 4 out of 5 UFC fights and deserves to start versing some top guys. Almeida is a worthy opponent and Siver would like to take him down in his hometown. Almeida could use this win to bounce him back from his Hughes loss.
——————————————————————————————————
Junior Dos Santos vs Winner of Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez
VS

It is already known that this fight is taken place. With a win over Roy Nelson at UFC 117 Junior Dos Santos has earned a shot at the Winner of Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquz. Dos Santos has quickly rolled over the competition in the Heavyweight division which has tabbed him a title shot. Whoever wins between Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquz will set up another fireworks fight with Junior Dos Santos.
——————————————————————————————————
Roy Nelson vs Shane Carwin

After losing his shot at a title opportunity to Junior Dos Santos who is a tough opponent to begin with. No one wanted a part of Junior Dos Santos and Roy Nelson stepped up and earned a lot of respect throughout the MMA community. Shane Carwin on the other hand is fresh off his loss to Brock Lesnar for the belt. Carwin absolutely pummeled Brock Lesnar in the 1st round which almost was stopped but he punched himself out and was submitted in the 2nd round. This would be an ideal bounce back fight both.
——————————————————————————————————
Rick Story vs Johnny Hendricks

Both Rick Story and Johnny Hendricks have taken the UFC by surprise. Rick Story since his first UFC fight and loss to John Hathaway has worked his way up the welterweight division with 4 wins in a row. Hendricks is undefeated in the UFC and is also riding a 4 fight win streak. Both are up and coming stars in the welterweight division and what a better way to match them up and see who is for real. Both seem to have a nice career in the UFC thus far, and to face each other could really jump one into some main card bouts.

Dustin Hazelett vs Damarques Johnson

This would be a Cut match in which the loser is cut from the UFC. Both haven’t had consistent success in the UFC and both need a win. Hazelett has loss his last 2 fights, and is 5-4 in the UFC. Johnson lossed his last fight and is now 2-2 in the UFC. Both would win 2 in a row but can’t make that extra leap to become a dominant fighter. This would be a good fight for both to have.

Phil Davis vs Ricardo Romero

Another fight that would be really interesting to see is Paul Davis and Ricardo Romero. Paul Davis seems unstoppable since his UFC Debut and has a 3-0 record in the UFC so far. Ricardo Romero who recently debuted in the UFC won an impressive bout against Seth Petruzelli. Romero got beat up in the first but keep pushing forward and wound up submitting Petruzelli. There is a lot of promise shown from both fighters as well as hype. This would be a good fight to see a possible star in the light heavyweight division.

Rodney Wallace vs Seth Petruzelli

Rodney Wallace if he doesn’t get cut and is given one more opportunity in the UFC could have an ideal fight waiting in Seth Petruzelli. Petruzelli is in the same situation almost as Wallace. Petruzelli was cut by the UFC in the past before returning in UFC 116. Petruzelli would go on to lose to Romero but he put on a good show in the 1st round most likely the factor to earn him another bout. This would be a another cut fight in which the loser gets cut. Wallace needs this win to avoid going 0-4 in the UFC, and Petruzelli needs a win to prove to himself and the UFC that he belongs.

Tim Boetsch vs Stephan Bonnar

Tim Boetsch recently won his return to the UFC but he was supposed to verse a top 10 fighter in Thiago Silva before being replaced by Todd Brown. I think Boetsch needs a good fight to prove himself and Stephan Bonnar would be a good start. Stephan Bonnar also needs a good fight to prove he belongs in the UFC. Bonnar was almost cut from the UFC but won his last fight verse Krzysztof Soszynski. Beating Boetsch would be a good way to get back to the top. Probably another “Cut Fight” for both fighters.

Stefan Struve vs Pat Barry

Stefan Struve got back on track with a win at UFC 117. Struve was so close to getting into the mix in the Heavyweight division before losing to Roy Nelson in his previous fight before his UFC 117 win. Pat Barry is a rising star in the Heavyweight division even though he lost to Mirko “Cro Cop” at UFC 115. Barry had knocked Mirko “Cro Cop” down 2 times in that fight, and broke his hand and foot. Although he lost via submission he doesn’t fall that far. This could be a good fight for both these guys. Both are notable fighters, and both want to get back on top.
——————————————————————————————————
James Irvin vs Todd Brown

If Irvin doesn’t get cut he could try to revive his career verse Todd Brown. Irvin has lost his last 3 fights including to Anderson Silva. Irvin was once a highly regarded fighter but since this 3 fight losing has fallen to the point of possibly being cut. Todd Brown made his debut at UFC 117 replacing Thiago Silva and lost to a very tough Tim Boetsch. This would be another tough fight for Brown but could be a big stepping stone if he wins. Irvin needs a win if he is given the shot at another fight in the UFC.
——————————————————————————————————
Christian Morecraft vs Chris Tuchscherer

Christian Morecraft lost in his UFC 117 debut to a good fighter in Stefan Struve but he did show that he is capable of fighting in the UFC with his first round performance. Morecraft was expected to be derailed but he actually surprised many by winning the first round verse Stefan Struve before getting knocked out in the 2nd. As for Chris Tuchscherer he hasn’t really had success in the UFC and is 1-2. He has fought some tough competition and hasn’t really shown he is ready to take it to the next level. He is coming off a TKO to Brendan Schaub and is in jeopardy of a job in the UFC, so this could be a good fight for both guys.
——————————————————————————————————
Ben Saunders vs Dan Hornbuckle

Despite being cut by the UFC Ben Saunders isn’t a fighter who is far from competing at that level. Saunders was once a contender in the welterweight division but couldn’t beat top guys like Jon Fitch and Mike Swick. The loss to a non top fighter like Dennis Hallman is what warranted the cut. Dan Hornbuckle has put together a nice career. A fight verse Saunders could get him recognized by the UFC. As for Saunders this fight could be a stepping stone back to the UFC for Saunders.
——————————————————————————————————
Dennis Hallman vs Charlie Brenneman

Dennis Hallman is back in the UFC win column and proved it with a big win over Ben Saunders at UFC 117. Hallman is mostly noted for the only guy to beat Matt Hughes twice and both within 21 seconds. Brenneman recently lost at UFC 117 to an undefeated Johny Hendricks. No doubt a tough fight for your 2nd UFC fight. Hallman needs to prove he can back in the UFC for good and Brenneman needs to rebound from his TKO lost to Johny Hendricks.

UFC: Mirko Cro Cop replaces Big Nog at UFC 119 main event
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira injuried his hip during training for his main event fight and rematch verse Frank Mir. So now, Mirko Cro Cop who is on a 2 fight win streak is stepping in for Big Nog. Cro Cop is coming off his comeback win over Pat Barry which after the fight Mirko pondered retirement. Now, he will fight again and verse a tough opponent. Frank Mir is mostly noted for his solid ground game and brutal submissions. Cro Cop is better suited if this match stays on their feet. Cro Cop skills on the ground are no match for Frank Mir’s. A tough fight for Cro Cop to take but it could catapult him up in the heavyweight division.
