NHL: Hornqvist re-signs with the Predators, News, and Rumors
The Nashville Predators re-signed the 30 goal scorer Patric Hornqvist. Hornqvist received a 3 year contract for 9.25 million. Hornqvist who was the last draft pick in the 2005 draft surprised many with his 30 goal season in the 2009-2010 season. Nashville hasn’t had much hope for a young player since Alexander Radulov.

The New Jersey Devils have been given a 2 day deadline to re-negotiate the voided deal before Kovalchuk will look elsewhere. KHL could still be in the running especially if the Devils fail to make a deal.
The Vancouver Canucks have put D Kevin Bieksa on the trade block. The Anaheim Ducks, and the San Jose Sharks could be the top landing spot.
C Ryan Johnson is being targeted by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Los Angeles Kings.
F Lee Stempniak who is currently one of the top free agents is being rumored to several teams including his old team the Phoenix Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Atlanta Thrashers
G Antti Niemi options are very slim. Some teams that could go after Niemi that seems logical could be the Sharks or the Islanders. Niemi could also find himself without a job or possible in Europe.
The San Jose Sharks do not intend to sign Owen Nolan, who is a fan favorite for his time there.
F/D Dustin Byfuglien could possible be playing defense and forward this year for the Atlanta Thrashers. Byfuglien is one of the few versatile players in the league that can play both offense and defense.

NHL: Blackhawks sign Turco which means Niemi’s time in Chicago is over
After the Blackhawks learned that Antti Niemi was set earn 2.75 million via the arbitration ruling. The Blackhawks sought way to fit Niemi under there already tight cap space. They couldn’t find a way and with Marty Turco waiting patiently, they decided to part ways with Niemi and welcome Turco. Turco is signing with the Blackhawks for 1 year and around 1.5 million. Turco was drafted by the Dallas Stars in 1994, was called up in 2000, and has been a dominant goalie since. His tenure of 9 seasons on the Stars is over as he will join the defending Stanley Cup Champions. A team that looks different with all the trades they have made to shed cap. Turco in 509 games is 262-154-26 with a 2.31 goals against average, .911 save percentage, and 40 shutouts.

NHL: Ilya Kovalchuk deal with the Devils voided by the NHL

NHL: Ilya Kovalchuk deal with the Devils voided by the NHL
Shortly after the New Jersey Devils held a press conference to announce the re-signing of Ilya Kovalchuk, the NHL has rejected it because it circumvents the league’s salary cap. The deal now needs to be reworked because once again Ilya Kovalchuk is a free agent. On Monday Ilya Kovalchuk re-signed with the New Jersey Devils for 17 years, 102 million, roughly earning him 6 million a year till he’s 44. The deal was deemed illegal because the years of low salary at the end of the contract were added for the only reasons of lowering the cap hit. In the last 5 years he was to earn 550,000.
The Contract Details before it being voided:
2010-2012 $6 million
2012-2017 $11.5 million
2017-2018 $10.5 million
2018-2019 $8.5 million
2019-2020 $6.5 million
2020-2021 $3.5 million
2021-2022 $750,000
2022-2027 $550,000

NHL: Simon Gagne traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning

NHL: Simon Gagne traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Philadelphia Flyers sent F Simon Gagne to the Tampa Bay Lightning for D Matt Walker and a fourth round pick in the 2011 draft. Simon Gagne was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1998 and stuck with them ever since. As a Flyer he scored 259 goals and dished out 265 assist which totals to 524 Points. Simon Gagne will boast the Tampa Bay Lightnings offense instantly. The Tampa Bay Lightning already have Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier, Steve Downie, and Ryan Malone offensively. To add Gagne to that will add another bolt to the already talented Lightning offense. After acquiring D Pavel Kubina and Brett Clark from free agency the Tampa Bay Lightning traded D Andrej Meszaros and now D Matt Walker to the Philadelphia Flyers. So really the Lightning didn’t hurt themselves on defense but made the Flyers defense a force. There are no issues at defense even with this trade. As for the Flyers they acquired D Matt Walker and a 4th round draft pick in 2011. Matt Walker is a big boy at 6’4, 215 pounds. He plays physical and is noted to be a great penalty killer. He should instantly help the Philadelphia Flyers D. The Flyers found there last starting defender in Walker who will be playing with the likes of Matt Carle, Chris Pronger, Andrej Meszaros, Kimmo Timonen, and Sean O’Donnell. Certainly sounds like a tough defense to me. Look at Steve Yzerman making a splash for the Tampa Bay Lightning this year as there new general manager. Overall a great trade for both teams.

NHL: Ilya Kovalchuk set to re-sign with the New Jersey Devils

NHL: Ilya Kovalchuk set to re-sign with the New Jersey Devils
Ilya Kovalchuk finally decided that he will be back with the New Jersey Devils. Kovalchuk had been receiving offers from a few teams. The Los Angeles Kings and the KHL were the active hunters for Kovalchuk. The New York Islanders had made a deal for 10 years, 100 million but Kovalchuk didn’t see any future there to even consider it. The Los Angeles Kings came close to landing Kovalchuk one day, then the other day it was all but dead. I’m guessing Kovalchuk just went ahead with the smarter option to re-sign instead of continuing contract talks with the Los Angeles Kings for another month. The KHL too were a possibility for Kovalchuk. For one he was going to get paid and the other was playing back in your hometown. So the KHL was probably an enticing choice. The New Jersey Devils acquired Kovalchuk on Feb. 4 along with defenceman Anssi Salmela for defenceman Johnny Oduya, forward Niclas Bergfors, junior prospect Patrice Cormier and a first round draft pick. The only details of the deal is that it is a 17 year contract over 100 million. The Devils will hold a press conference Tuesday at the Prudential Center.
