Bellator 78 Predictions

Posted by KDog13 on October 26, 2012

Quick Breakdown

  • Lyman Good is an excellent wrestler, and pretty well rounded fighter, and I believe should take this fight rather easily. Expect Tsarev to threaten with some submissions though, but Good will shrug them off .
  • Although Marius Zaromskis is not favored in this fight, he has been able to utilize his striking ability and work in some takedowns to edge out close decisions. His opponent Koreshkov is no joke though, and has a strong striking game. If Zaromskis can keep Koreshkov at a distance and pick him off, and avoid being hit, he could edge this out. I’m going with the Vet Zaromskis.
  • Daniel Straus is a pure wrestler, with a great top game, and Alvin Robinson will have nothing to offer him in this fight. Straus should easily take this one, lock it in.
  • Brian Rogers always brings it, and is one of the most exciting fighters in Bellator. His opponent is a game one, and I believe we are in for a slugfest with the heavy handed slugger Rogers redeeming himself after losing in a brawl to Andreas Spang.

UFC 153 Aftermath: Matches to Make

Posted by KDog13 on October 22, 2012

Anderson Silva vs George St. Pierre

This fight needs to happen, but I’m not completely sure it will just right now. I’m hopeful and wishful that with all the talk about it that it will happen soon though. The middleweight division is more up in the air right now than the welterweight division so that disrupts things. What I mean is that after Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch tangle at UFC 155, it only makes sense that Chris Weidman and Michael Bisping fight to be the number one contender. Although I’m not sure how Dana White will handle that situation. The welterweight division already has a number one contender fight in my opinion in Martin Kampmann vs Johny Hendricks that takes place the same nice George St. Pierre returns to defend his belt against Carlos Condit at UFC 154. So I’m not sure how Dana White would ignore the winner of a title shot, and make the Silva fight. Also Fitch, Diaz, Maia, and Ellenberger are all waiting in the wings, whereas in the middleweight division the contenders are slimmer at this moment. Anyways, I’d love to see this fight, and I bet everyone wants this as the next best option considering Anderson Silva and Jon Jones won’t fight each other.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Fabricio Werdum II

This would be an awesome rematch, although Nogueira isn’t the same guy he was back when he defeated Werdum in 2006. But, Nogueira has had a late resurgence, and has turned my head certainly that he still can be a dangerous fighter in the heavyweight division. Obviously age has caught up with him but his skill set is still better than most heavyweights.  Werdum has evolved since the loss in 2006, and has defeated top ranked fighters including his biggest win over Fedor Emelianenko who at the time was considered the number one heavyweight. Werdum who was looked at as a one tool fighter, has now improved in the striking department vastly to the point where he can be a legit contender to be a champion in the UFC. Nogueira wants a top 10 fighter, and while Stefan Struve, or Antonio Silva might be possible matchups out there, I think those two guys match up better against each other than against Nogueira.

Glover Teixeira vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

I realize that it’s more probable that Teixeira will be facing “Rampage” Jackson as they were scheduled once before, but honestly Teixeira could totally tool Jackson on the ground if he wanted too. I think Teixeira is climbing up the light heavyweight ranks really quickly, and certainly has the skill set to be a dangerous contender. A fight against “Rampage” Jackson would be good namesake, but it’s unknown if Jackson will be “100%” or would even prepare for Glover if the floor. I think an opponent who matches up well with Teixeira and ranking wise is right there with him is Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. A dangerous striker, who can hold his own stuffing takedowns, and is a black belt in BJJ. I think stylistically it would be an amazing fight, and it certainly makes sense.

Jon Fitch vs Demian Maia

This seems like the most logical fight, and certainly has the potential to be a grappling affair. I for one, am intrigued by this fight, and certainly what it would mean for the winner. Both guys fought at UFC 153, and put in great performances. Fitch took Fight of the Night honors, while dethroning the hype around not only his opponent Erick Silva, but his inability to be an exciting fighter. If Fitch can get the right opponent, it’s scary how awesome his fights could get, because certainly Silva helped make this one a good one. As for Maia, he easily ragdolled Rick Story, and finished him by submission. Oddly Maia who is a black belt in BJJ, had not recorded a submission victory since 2009. That was back when he was 11-0, with 8 victories via submission. Anyways, Maia since dropping to welterweight has now defeated two top 20 welterweights and has his sights set on either Fitch or Diaz. This would be an awesome fight, so I don’t see why not.

Rony Bezerra vs Robert Peralta

Bezerra looks like a promising TUF winner, and is very exciting to watch. The only issue, is his striking defense, but he proved he can take a punch or two. Against higher tier opponents, that could be an issue, but I think he vastly improving and is dangerous anywhere. His potential is certainly intriguing, and being under the tutelage of the Nogueira brothers will continue to help him progress. A worthy opponent is the underlooked Robert Peralta who carries some really heavy hands (16 wins, 12 are knockouts). Peralta is already 2-0-1 in the UFC, and before that has wins over notables such as Hiroyuki Takaya, and Darrell Montague. This would be a perfect fight, to see who is ready for a bigger test in the UFC.

Gleison Tibau vs TJ Grant

It’s hard to believe that Tibau is still only 29 years old, with 34 fights under his belt, 17 of which come in the UFC. Not too many fighters with that many fights go unnoticed in the UFC, but Tibau has. At UFC 153, Tibau put forward a strong performance to notch his 11th win in the UFC. It seems Tibau has always been in the middle of the pack when it comes to lightweights, but I feel it’s time for a fight that could vault him to better fights. A fight that would do that is against TJ Grant, who has been a monster since dropping down to lightweight. Grant has gone 3-0, including a big win over Evan Dunham which earned him fight of the night honors. Grant is due for a tough test as well, and a fight against Gleison Tibau could catapult him into the top 10.

UFC 153: Silva vs Bonnar Results

Posted by KDog13 on October 14, 2012

Main Card:

Anderson Silva def. Stephan Bonnar by TKO (strikes)  Round 1 (4:40)

Breakdown: Bonnar put in a good first, and made it interesting. But Silva connected late in the first with a perfectly timed knee to the solar plexus that crumbled Bonnar, and followed with punches until the ref stopped it.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira def. Dave Herman by submission (armbar) Round 2 (4:31)

Breakdown: Big Nog got the better of Herman in the striking department and while Herman survived submission attempts in the first, in the second Big Nog was able to finally able to put away Herman by armbar.

Glover Teixeira def. Fabio Maldonado by TKO (doctor’s stoppage) Round 2 (5:00)

Breakdown: Glover proved to be way too much whether it was on the feet or on the ground, but Fabio took the punishment the entire fight, and had the heart of a lion. At one point Fabio actually rocked Teixeira, but his face was brutalized by the end of the second and was visually wobbly. Fabio wanted to continue, but the doctor said no, and the ref waved it off.

Jon Fitch def. Erick Silva by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Breakdown: As a Fitch fan, I was so pleased to see him put on a display. The fight was exciting, and both fighters were close to near finishes. Fitch was able to use his wrestling, submission defense, and solid top control to end the hype of Erick Silva for now. Silva no doubt has a bright future, but this jump was way to much, and even being the favorite in this fight just proves the bizarreness.

Phil Davis def. Wagner Prado by submission (anaconda choke) Round 2 (4:29)

Breakdown: Phil Davis executed his gameplan to a tee, as Prado was no match for his wrestling and heavy top game. It was only a matter of time until Davis was able to wear out Prado and submit him via a beautiful anaconda choke.

Demian Maia def. Rick Story by submission (rear-naked choke) Round 1 (2:30)

Breakdown: Demian Maia easily ragdolled Rick Story, and once you saw that, you knew Maia jui-jitsu would finish this fight. Maia is now 2-0 in the welterweight division, and has beaten two top guys.

Preliminary Card:

Rony Jason def. Sam Sicilia by TKO (strikes) Round 3 (4:15)

Gleison Tibau def. Francisco Trinaldo by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Diego Brandao def. Joey Gambino by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Sergio Moraes def. Renee Forte by submission (rear-naked choke) Round 3 (3:10)

Chris Camozzi def. Luiz Cane by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Cristiano Marcello def. Reza Madadi by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)

UFC 153: Silva vs Bonnar Predictions

Posted by KDog13 on October 13, 2012

Anderson Silva vs Stephan Bonnar

An underrated fight in my opinion, and due to the fact that it’s only three rounds gives Bonnar a shot. I’m not saying Bonnar is going to win this but he does have the tools to make this fight interesting, and he has shown he can use his wrestling well enough to get a win. I’m am very curious as to see what Bonnar’s gameplan for this fight is because we have all seen Bonnar fight, and he comes to fight but if tries to take the Chael approach he could make this interesting. Silva is on another level though, and I think although Bonnar should makes this a scrap, Silva’s striking will prove too much as he will be too elusive for Bonnar. I’m expecting a three round war and I don’t see Bonnar going away but I see Anderson Silva out striking Bonnar, and taking the fight by decision.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Dave Herman

The Legend returns to the octagon after recovering from a broken arm he sustained in defeat to Frank Mir almost ten months ago. I was leaning towards picking Big Nog in this one, and I think everyone believes this is a gimme fight, but Herman is no joke. Sure he has lost two fights in a row, but to caliber opponents in Struve and Nelson. Herman’s ground game is not even close to Nogueira’s, and while I’m positive if it hits the ground Nogueira will win, I don’t think it will this fight. Herman predicted a submission win in round two, but I think he will knockout Big Nog in round one. I’m just not crazy about Big Nog’s chin lately, and Herman has an arsenal of deadly strikes. I believe Herman will upset here.

Glover Teixeira vs Fabio Maldonado

If you wanted to see a war, you got one here. Two strikers will go toe to toe, and I highly doubt this one will go to a decision. I’ve always liked Teixeira and wondered for years when he would be in the UFC, and I’m glad he is because he will become a fan favorite. Maldonado is one of the best body punchers I’ve ever seen, and has an iron chin. The only question I have here is that if it hits the ground, can he handle Teixeira who is a black belt? I doubt it but I think that this one is going to be a slugfest, and Glover is going to get the better of it and beat up Maldonado until the refs stops this one. Glover by TKO in round one!

Jon Fitch vs Erick Silva

Fitch will return to the octagon after recovering from injuries that have kept out of the octagon and avenging his shocking defeat to fellow welterweight contender Johny Hendricks. Fitch carries an impressive UFC record at 13-2-1, and although he is not a fan favorite, he knows how to win. Silva is on a tear, destroying his opponents early in the first round, and seems to be the next big thing in the UFC. His striking is crisp and lethal, and he has solid judo and Jui-Jitsu in which he holds black belts in. This is a tough fight, and I’m surprised Silva is the favorite. I know given his recent success, but Fitch has been in this game for a long time and until recently has enjoyed more success than. I think Fitch will put forth a battle in this fight, and although that might be shocking, I actually think he will put away Silva in the third round. I’m unsure of Silva’s cardio but Fitch is among the best, and I think he’s going to outlast Silva’s hype. Fitch will get his first finish in more than 5 years, and it will be shocking!

Phil Davis vs Wagner Prado

The first time these guys squared off it unfortunately ended in a no contest after Phil Davis accidently poked Wagner Prado in the eye, and was deemed unable to continue. Now they will meet again, and I’m pretty excited. The reason for my excitement is that Prado’s energy is insane, you can tell he loves this sport, and is ready to go. Davis doesn’t have the best striking but his ground game is really good, so it will be interesting to see where this one will take place. If Prado can keep it standing, I think he could take the upset here, but if Davis can get some takedowns in and try work his submission game, I believe Davis will take. With that said, Davis has more experience in the UFC, and although fighting on Prado’s turf, I think he will takedown Prado several times in route to a decision victory.

Demian Maia vs Rick Story

I’ve gone back and forth with predictions on this one, and boy is this really an awesome fight. Maia will look to build off his quick win over Dong Hyun Kim in his welterweight debut. Maia has always been a top ranked fighter, and was just a  one trick pony with his submission game, but his striking has progressed well enough to be known now.  Story will look to build off his decision victory over Brock Jardine that ended a two fight losing streak. While I like Maia and he obviously the favorite, I like what Story brings to the table. His lost over Brenneman is why people may be down on his but you have to realize that was put together basically the day before the fight, and that definitely if not sufficient enough time to gameplan against anyone. I think if they fought again, Story would have his way but I’m not going to get into that. Story can wrestle, and strike and if he puts together a gameplan similar to that of when he defeated Thiago Alves, he could upset here. His takedown defense, and inability to get back up has been his weak spots and Maia definitely can exploit that. But, I’m thinking he keeps this one standing and outstrikes Maia to a decision victory.
